A Mystery of History: Easter Island |
|
There are many unanswered
questions about Easter Island. Here are some of them: 1.“How were the moai moved and raised?”- Many scientists, archeologists, and explorers have tried to figure this out. Some of them suggested laying the statues on their backs with logs under them using the logs as rollers. Others suggested supernatural uses of transportation such as the moai being placed on Easter Island by aliens, or they were moved using “Mana”, or psychic powers. 2.“Why were the moai made? To represent ancestors? To mark the solar calendar? To mark property boundaries?”- Most people are sure that the moai were made to represent ancestors, but there might have been other reasons. While most moai face out to the sea, some face towards the sun during the equinox or the solstices. They might have also marked poperty boundaries. Each statue representing an ancestor or person that has passed away, the statues might have been placed in the area of which that person lived and might have been recognized as property markers of that area. 3. “Why did Easter Island culture disappear? Why did they stop carving the moai?”- It is believed that sometime through Easter Island history there was a war between tribes. A war was fought over natural resources that had been overused and wasted such as trees used for wood, vegetables and fruits. It is believed that during this war statue carving and other cultural activities had been discontinued. Today some of those cultural activities have been revived and are being done today, but they have not carved moai since then. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
